Dr. Daniel I. Rees is a Professor in the Department of Economics at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, and an IZA Research Fellow. He serves as coeditor of the American Journal of Health Economics and Journal of Policy Analysis and Management. He holds a B.A. from Oberlin College (1986), M.S. from University of Wisconsin-Madison (1988), and Ph.D. from Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations (1992).
His research focuses on risky adolescent behavior, prenatal stress effects on child health, and historical analyses like the mortality transition in early 20th century and Black-White infant mortality gaps. Recent work explores long-term smoking impacts and public health interventions.
Key articles include studies on water purification’s role in reducing infant mortality gaps, occupational licensing’s effect on maternal health, and marijuana legalization’s public health implications. He has published extensively in journals like the American Economic Journal and Journal of Political Economy.
Teaching includes graduate courses on Economics of Health Behaviors and undergraduate Global Health. His work often bridges economic policy and health outcomes, with a focus on marginalized populations.
