Daniel Gilfillan is an Associate Professor of German Studies at Arizona State University's School of International Letters and Cultures. He also serves as a Senior Global Futures Scholar at the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory and Faculty Affiliate in Jewish Studies. His research explores intersections between sound, media, and environmental humanities. Gilfillan holds a Ph.D. in Germanic Languages and Literatures from the University of Oregon (2000), with a dissertation on Alfred Andersch's technological themes.
Research Interests: Twentieth-century German/Austrian studies, media studies (radio/film/sound), environmental humanities, critical cultural studies. Recent work includes *The Unsung Planet* (in progress), examining sound's role in environmental resilience, and co-editing *Before Brecht: Hans Flesch and Weimar-Era Radio Theory*.
Awards include the 2022-23 Paul Hirt Excellence in Environmental Humanities Prize. He has mentored over 40 graduate and undergraduate students, focusing on interdisciplinary topics like sound ecology and Holocaust studies. His grants include NEH and NSF proposals on acoustic ecology and radio art.
Publications span monographs, edited volumes, and over 30 peer-reviewed articles in journals like *German Quarterly*, *Modern Austrian Literature*, and *Journal of Jewish Identities*. Key themes include experimental radio history, sound art, and media's role in sustainability.
