Daniel R. Ferreira is an Associate Professor of Environmental Science at Kennesaw State University and serves as the Assistant Department Chair for the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology. With a background in environmental industry roles (field geologist, environmental scientist, lab technician, and risk manager), he integrates practical experience into his teaching of courses like Introduction to Environmental Science, Soil & Water Science, and a study abroad program on Earth Science & Culture of Japan.
His research focuses on soil chemistry and phytoremediation, particularly the removal of radioactive cesium (133Cs) from soils contaminated by the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Disaster. Collaborating with physiological ecologist Matt Weand, he investigates how plants can 'jailbreak' cesium from clay minerals through natural nutrient uptake mechanisms, aiming to reduce acute radiation hazards in affected regions of Japan.
The 2018 article on cesium adsorption on vermiculite highlights his work on ion exchange dynamics in radioactive soils. His team uses simulated Fukushima soil (silica sand mixed with vermiculite) to study cesium behavior and potential plant-based remediation strategies. This research addresses long-term environmental recovery challenges, including soil contamination, agronomic risks, and radiation health impacts.
In collaboration with undergraduate students and Japanese researchers, Ferreira plans plant trials to test phytoremediation efficacy. His efforts emphasize practical solutions for contaminated soil management, leveraging plant evolution's billions of years of adaptation to nutrient uptake challenges.
