Daniel Desormeaux is William D. and Robin Mayer Professor and Head of French Subdivision at Johns Hopkins University. He specializes in 19th-century French/Caribbean literature, examining the Haitian Revolution, slavery, and transatlantic intellectual exchanges through historical, legal, and anthropological lenses.
His research reconstructs textual cultures of revolution and colonialism, analyzing how Caribbean literary/religious traditions engaged with French political thought. He also investigates print culture's role in shaping French literary history during the Fin-de-Siècle.
Education includes a Ph.D. from Emory University and M.A. degrees from Université du Québec à Montréal and Johns Hopkins. Previously tenured at University of Chicago and Kentucky, he has held visiting positions at Université du Mans, France.
