Emmanuel Nikiema is an Associate Professor of French and Linguistics at the University of Toronto, specializing in phonology, morphology, and linguistic theory. He joined the university in 1994 after a research fellowship at Laval University and has held visiting positions at institutions including the University of Chicago, CNRS, and universities in Japan and South Korea.

His research focuses on syllabic representations, licensing mechanisms, and the phonology/morphology of Creole, Romance, and African languages. He has published extensively on Haitian Creole, French lexifier creoles, and African languages like Kirundi, with a monograph on French phonology and morphology (Brousseau & Nikiema 2001).
