معرفی
Professor Daniel Birks is a computational social scientist at the School of Law, University of Leeds. His work bridges criminology, complexity science, and data analytics to advance evidence-based policy and policing. Affiliated with the ESRC Vulnerability and Policing Futures Research Centre and LIDA:Societies, he collaborates with UK and Australian police, government agencies, and public sector institutions to address crime reduction and urban challenges.
- PhD Criminology
- MSc Cognitive Science
- BSc (Hons) Artificial Intelligence & Computer Science
His research focuses on harnessing administrative data and computational simulations to understand crime patterns, predict dynamics, and design interventions. Key themes include:
- Proactive crime reduction through data science
- Agent-based modeling of police demand and urban systems
- Intelligence-led policing and situational crime prevention
- Interdisciplinary applications of machine learning and epidemiology
Dr. Birks has secured over £18m in competitive funding for projects like Healthy Urban Places (UKRI/MRC, 2023-2027) and computational policing initiatives with the N8 Police Research Partnership. His work has been published in top journals including Criminology, The Journal of Quantitative Criminology, and The Journal of Experimental Criminology.
Scientific Awards
- Alan Turing Institute Fellowship (2018-2020)
- Three successive Turing Fellowships (2018-2023)
He mentors early-career data scientists and has supervised PhD students such as Dr. Anthony Dixon on NLP for policing and Dr. Natacha Chenevoy on AI-driven patrol optimization. His leadership in establishing the Griffith Social Analytics Lab in Australia and co-directing LIDA:Societies underscores his commitment to data-driven societal solutions.
