Jerry Ratcliffe is a Professor of Criminology and Faculty Director of the Master of Applied Criminology and Police Leadership at the University of Pennsylvania. He holds a B.Sc. (first class) and Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Nottingham. Previously, he served as a police officer with London’s Metropolitan Police for 11 years, later transitioning to academia and research.
His career includes roles as a lecturer at the New South Wales Police College, senior research analyst at the Australian Institute of Criminology, and professor at Temple University, where he directed the Center for Security and Crime Science. He advises agencies like the FBI, Philadelphia Police Department, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
Ratcliffe’s research focuses on crime reduction strategies, intelligence-led policing, and evidence-based policing. He led the Philadelphia Foot Patrol Experiment and authored over 100 articles and books, including Reducing Crime and Evidence-Based Policing: The Basics. He hosts the Reducing Crime podcast and has received numerous awards for his contributions to criminology and policing.
Notable accolades include the Sir Robert Peel Medal and fellowships from the Academy of Experimental Criminology. His work bridges academic research with practical police strategies, emphasizing data-driven approaches to public safety.
