Daniel Beck is a Reader and lecturer in the Department of Communication and Media Sciences at the University of Fribourg, Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences and Management. He also serves as a study advisor and manages the department’s website. He earned his doctorate (Dr. rer. soc.) in 2005 with research on the development of sports sections in Swiss newspapers.
His primary research interests include:

His recent scholarly work, published between 2023 and 2024, focuses on comparative reporting on Islam, young journalists in Switzerland, and the mediatization of national sports like Schwingen. Earlier publications examine sports celebrities such as Roger Federer, media coverage of major events like the Olympics and FIFA World Cup, gender representation in sports media, and the evolution of sports journalism.
Daniel Beck has contributed to numerous peer-reviewed journals such as Journalism, Studies in Communication Sciences, and MedienJournal, as well as major edited volumes and encyclopedias including the International Encyclopedia of Media Effects. He frequently collaborates with scholars like Patric Raemy, Regula Hänggli, and Steffen Kolb.
He teaches seminars for bachelor's students and supervises bachelor's and master's theses. He is actively engaged in the academic community through presentations at international conferences in media and communication studies.
