Daniel Bachovchin is an Associate Professor at the Sloan Kettering Institute, part of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he leads the Bachovchin Laboratory. His research program is affiliated with multiple academic entities including the Tri-Institutional Training Program in Chemical Biology, the Tri-Institutional MD-PhD Program, the Gerstner Sloan Kettering Graduate Program, and the Weill Cornell Medical College Graduate Program in Pharmacology.
Daniel Bachovchin received his AB from Harvard College before earning his PhD in 2011 from The Scripps Research Institute under the guidance of Dr. Benjamin F. Cravatt. He then completed postdoctoral training from 2011-2015 in Dr. Todd Golub's laboratory at The Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard.
Bachovchin's research focuses on the molecular mechanisms controlling inflammasome formation and activation within the innate immune system. His lab uses chemical and cell biology approaches to investigate how NLRP1 and CARD8 inflammasomes sense danger signals and trigger pyroptotic cell death. A major focus of his work involves studying how protease inhibitors like Val-boroPro and DPP9 inhibitors activate these inflammasome pathways, with implications for cancer immunotherapy and treatment of infectious diseases. His research spans chemical biology, immunology, and translational medicine, with particular emphasis on understanding species-specific differences in inflammasome activation.
Analysis of Bachovchin's recent publications reveals a consistent focus on inflammasome biology, particularly the CARD8 and NLRP1 pathways. His work demonstrates sophisticated integration of chemical biology tools with immunological approaches to dissect molecular mechanisms of immune activation. A notable trend is the increasing emphasis on redox regulation of inflammasomes, as seen in multiple 2023-2024 publications examining how oxidative and reductive stress influences inflammasome activation.

Bachovchin actively mentors graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, with numerous trainees listed as co-authors on his publications. His lab has received substantial grant funding from prestigious organizations including Stand Up to Cancer, the Pershing Square Sohn Cancer Research Alliance, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The lab maintains collaborations across MSKCC and with external institutions, as evidenced by co-authorship with researchers from Harvard, MIT, and other leading institutions. The Bachovchin Lab is part of the Chemical Biology Program at Sloan Kettering Institute, which brings together researchers applying chemical principles to investigate cutting-edge topics in biology and medicine under the leadership of Derek Tan.
