David Simon is an Assistant Professor at the Graduate School of Medical Sciences, Weill Cornell Medicine, where he leads the Simon Lab. His research focuses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms that govern neuronal survival and degeneration, with implications for neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders as well as cancer. He is affiliated with the Department of Biochemistry & Structural Biology and the Neuroscience program.
Research Interests: Dr. Simon's work centers on three major areas: (1) the cell biology of neuronal survival, investigating how neurons maintain longevity despite stressors like injury or loss of trophic support; (2) axon pruning during development, which serves as a model for understanding selective vulnerability in diseases; and (3) nerve-tumor interactions, particularly how axons survive and function within the tumor microenvironment, using melanoma as a model system.
The recent publications from the lab indicate a strong trend toward understanding the intersection of the nervous and immune systems, particularly how immune cells like T cells can drive axon degeneration. Research spans disciplines including neurobiology, cell signaling, developmental neuroscience, and cancer neuroscience, often employing advanced imaging, genetics, and biochemical approaches.
