Dr. Daniel A. Smith is a Professor and former Chair (2017-2024) of the Department of Political Science at the University of Florida. He holds the titles of University of Florida Term Professor (2016-2019) and University of Florida Research Foundation Professor (2010-2012). He earned his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1994) and dual B.A.s from Penn State University (1988).
His research focuses on state politics, direct democracy, voting rights, and electoral laws. Key works include Tax Crusaders and the Politics of Direct Democracy (1998), Educated by Initiative (2004), and State and Local Politics (2015). He has advised numerous PhD students who now hold academic roles.
Dr. Smith’s awards include the APSA State Politics and Policy Section’s Best Paper Award (2013). He has provided expert testimony in high-profile legal cases, including Husted v. A. Philip Randolph Institute, and advised international organizations like the National Democratic Institute. His research spans domestic and international contexts, including Ghanaian electoral reforms and U.S.-Africa electoral collaborations.
He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed articles and serves on boards such as Common Cause Florida. His work emphasizes the impact of electoral laws on political participation and democratic governance.
