He serves as a principal investigator for the Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) project, which has measured hundreds of democracy attributes globally since 1900 and received the 2016 APSA Comparative Politics Section Best Dataset Award.
His research focuses on democratization, democracy quality, Latin American party systems, Venezuelan politics, and comparative methodology. Key interests include
- Democracy measurement and data visualization
- Causes of stable democracy in Latin America
- Diffusion of democratic practices
- Comparative party system analysis across eleven Latin American countries
Recent publications (2023-2016) demonstrate strong focus on democratic erosion, V-Dem methodology applications, and Latin American case studies. His work spans top journals like World Politics, Comparative Political Studies, and Journal of Politics, with consistent emphasis on mixed-method approaches bridging large-N quantitative analysis and small-N qualitative studies.

Coppedge advises doctoral students through Kellogg Institute mentorship programs and leads major grants including NSF-funded V-Dem research on democratization consequences and USAID-funded democracy training workshops in El Salvador. His current projects analyze international influences on democracy using V-Dem data and explore causal sequences within democratic systems.
He directs the Varieties of Democracy working group and organizes international conferences on democratic development, maintaining active collaboration with scholars across six continents through the V-Dem Institute at University of Gothenburg.
