Dana R. Fisher is a Professor in the School of International Service at American University and Director of the Center for Environment, Community, & Equity (CECE). She holds a PhD and MS from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a BA in East Asian Studies and Environmental Studies from Princeton University. Fisher is a Non-Resident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution and chairs the Political Sociology Section of the American Sociological Association.
Her research focuses on climate politics, civic engagement, and activism, employing mixed-methods approaches including interviews, participant observation, and survey data. Key projects include studies on political elites' climate responses, climate activism dynamics, and national service corps' disaster resilience efforts. Fisher has authored over 80 peer-reviewed works and seven books, including her 2024 book Saving Ourselves: From Climate Shocks to Climate Action, which explores mass mobilization as a climate solution.
Fisher frequently engages the media, appearing on ABC, CBS, CNN, and PBS, and has delivered a TED Talk on 'apocalyptic optimism.' She contributed to the IPCC's Sixth Assessment Report, focusing on citizen engagement, and serves on editorial boards for Climate Action, Climate Policy, and Mobilization. Her work bridges academia, policy, and public discourse, emphasizing grassroots activism's role in driving systemic change.
