Damien Scalia serves as Professor of Law at the Université libre de Bruxelles and holds a Visiting Professor position in international criminal law at the University of Lausanne. His academic career spans multiple prestigious research institutions including Columbia Law School, the Irish Center for Human Rights, Oxford Institute for Ethics, Law and Armed Conflict, and the Geneva Academy.
Scalia's research program has centered on the international criminal justice system for over 15 years, with a distinctive methodology involving direct interviews with individuals tried for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. His work critically examines the functioning of international criminal justice through the perspectives of those commonly referred to as 'genocidaires' or 'war criminals,' revealing institutional aporias and unattainable expectations within this legal framework.
His publication record demonstrates consistent scholarly output in international criminal law, with works spanning journal articles, book chapters, and forthcoming monographs. The research trajectory shows increasing focus on the lived experiences of perpetrators within international justice mechanisms, employing interdisciplinary approaches that bridge law, criminology, sociology, and anthropology. His methodology of conducting over 60 interviews with persons tried by international tribunals represents a significant contribution to understanding the human dimensions of international criminal justice.
Scalia co-founded and co-directs the Centre for Research in Criminal Law at ULB and the Centre for Research on War Experience (MSH), establishing institutional frameworks for sustained investigation into war crimes and international justice mechanisms. These research centers facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration and support his distinctive empirical approach to studying international criminal law in practice.
