Dr Damian Hussey is an Associate Professor at Flinders University's College of Medicine and Public Health. He leads laboratory research programs focused on Upper Gastrointestinal Disease and ENT Diseases, with particular expertise in head and neck cancers. His work provides principal direction for laboratory studies pertaining to Barrett's oesophagus and the development of oesophageal cancer.
Dr Hussey's research focuses on the identification of biomarkers for discrimination of non-malignant and malignant oesophageal disease, and the use of biomarkers for assessing response to treatments for Barrett's oesophagus and oesophageal cancer. He is developing blood tests for Gastrointestinal and Head and Neck cancers, and profiling cancers from other anatomical sites using these tests. His work contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in health and well-being.
His research output shows consistent productivity with 84 research outputs spanning from 1996 to 2023. Recent publications demonstrate continued active research in biomarker discovery, microRNA analysis, and therapeutic targets for oesophageal cancer. His work has been cited 2520 times with an h-index of 27, indicating significant impact in his field.
Dr Hussey has supervised multiple students in the area of molecular biology of pre-malignant and malignant disease, with 2 principal supervisions and 7 associate supervisions completed. His supervisory interests include molecular and cellular biology of upper gastrointestinal cancers, microRNAs and upper gastrointestinal cancers, and circulating extracellular microRNAs.
His educational background includes a Bachelor of Science (Honours) completed in 1994 and a PhD in 2000, establishing a strong foundation for his research career in cancer biology and biomarker development.
