Damian Bailey is Professor of Physiology and Biochemistry and Royal Society Wolfson Research Fellow at the University of South Wales, where he directs the Neurovascular Research Laboratory. His work investigates free radical-mediated neurovascular function during hypoxia and exercise, integrating molecular techniques like electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy with physiological measurements. Research spans extreme environments including high-altitude expeditions and spaceflight analogues.
Current projects include SMART-SHIELD (structural monitoring), HAUNT (head injury in sport), and RELATIVITY (neurovascular hypoxia responses). Publications examine cerebrovascular dysfunction, oxidative stress in extreme apnea, and physiological countermeasures for Mars missions. Bailey collaborates globally with space medicine and vascular physiology experts.
