Thomas Owens is a Lecturer in the Faculty of Life Sciences and Education at the University of South Wales, affiliated with the Sport and Exercise Research and Innovation Group. He is actively involved in research focusing on neurovascular health, cognitive function, and the physiological impacts of hypoxia and sports-related head injuries.
His research interests include cerebrovascular circulation, cognitive dysfunction, nitrosative stress, hypoxia, and the long-term neurological effects of contact sports such as rugby and soccer. His work bridges exercise physiology, neuroscience, and sports medicine, with a strong emphasis on athlete brain health.
His recent publications (2023–2025) reveal a consistent focus on cerebrovascular responses to hypoxia, cognitive outcomes in athletes, and nutritional influences on cognitive decline in retired players. These studies employ clinical and physiological assessments, often in controlled or field settings, and contribute significantly to understanding brain health in sports.

Dr. Owens has been involved in advising and collaborative research, particularly within large interdisciplinary teams. He completed his PhD in 2022 on the neurovascular implications of lifelong rugby participation. He is currently co-investigator on two major research projects: 'Head injury iN sport: HAUNT' and 'The brain at altitude,' both funded through 2027. These projects involve national and international collaborations and aim to influence sports safety and high-altitude medicine.
He is part of a dynamic research network focused on brain health in athletes, working closely with experts in cerebrovascular physiology and neurodegeneration. His lab or research group operates within the Sport and Exercise Research and Innovation Group, conducting human-based physiological and cognitive studies.
