Dale Clayton is a Professor in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Utah, where he has held academic appointments since 1996. He earned his master's degree in Entomology from the University of Minnesota and a Ph.D. in Evolutionary Biology from the University of Chicago, followed by postdoctoral work and a lectureship at Oxford University. Clayton leads research on host-parasite coevolution, with specialization in avian-ectoparasite interactions, evidenced by extensive fieldwork in the Galápagos Islands and the Bahamas. His investigations encompass adaptive radiation, grooming behaviors, climate impacts on parasite communities, and genomic adaptations in symbiotic bacteria.
Clayton's research integrates experimental evolution, genomics, and field ecology to examine coevolutionary dynamics. Key interests include:
- Impacts of invasive parasites on endemic bird species
- Behavioral defenses against ectoparasites
- Genomic basis of host specialization
- Climate-mediated changes in parasite communities
Publications emphasize avian grooming as a survival strategy, parasite adaptation to arid environments, genomic erosion in endosymbionts, and fitness landscapes in Darwin's finches. Recurring themes include experimental validation of coevolutionary theory, conservation implications of invasive parasites, and multidisciplinary approaches to host-parasite systems.
Clayton has received significant recognition including:
- Fellow of AAAS (2022)
- H.B. Ward Medal - highest honor of the American Society of Parasitologists (2008)
- Distinguished Research and Innovation Awards from the University of Utah
- Multiple named lectureships at leading institutions
As director of the Clayton-Bush Lab, he oversees research employing captive bird colonies, field experiments, and genomic analyses. The lab studies host-parasite coadaptation through systematics, experimental evolution, and conservation biology. Clayton co-founded Larada Sciences (Lice Clinics of America), translating research into practical parasite control solutions.
