Cyrus Cooper is a Professor of Musculoskeletal Science at the University of Oxford and a Professor of Rheumatology at the University of Southampton, where he also serves as Director of the MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit and Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. His work bridges clinical research, epidemiology, and public health, with a focus on musculoskeletal disorders and their developmental origins.
- Education: Graduated from the University of Cambridge and St Bartholomew's Hospital, London (1980); completed residency at Southampton University Hospitals (1985).
Professor Cooper's research program investigates epidemiological determinants of osteoporosis and musculoskeletal health, including maternal vitamin D insufficiency's impact on childhood bone mineral accrual, vertebral fracture characterization, and large-scale clinical trials of calcium and vitamin D supplementation in the elderly. His recent publications highlight interdisciplinary approaches to bone health, fracture prevention economics, and intergenerational body composition studies.
Scientific recognition includes:
- Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) for medical research (2015)

He chairs the International Osteoporosis Foundation's Committee of Scientific Advisors, the Arthritis Research UK Clinical Studies Initiative, and the BHF Project Grants Committee. He has published over 750 papers and leads the MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit, which received quinquennial funding through 2020.
