Cynthia Koledo DeAlmeida is an Associate Teaching Professor of Oboe at Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Music, where she has served as faculty since 1991 and held her current rank since 2012. She is also the Principal Oboe of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra since 1991, appointed by Lorin Maazel. Previously, she served as Associate Principal Oboe of the Philadelphia Orchestra under Riccardo Muti. Her affiliations include teaching roles at Temple University, Trenton State College, the National Orchestral Institute, and the New World Symphony.
DeAlmeida holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Michigan (studying under Arno Mariotti) and a Master of Music from Temple University (with Richard Woodhams). She has collaborated extensively with contemporary composers, commissioning works such as Michael Moricz’s Three Consequences for Four Players (2015) and Chris Massa’s Scenes from Lake Chautauqua (2020). Her solo and chamber recordings, including Silver and Gold (2015), have received critical acclaim from Gramophone and Fanfare magazines.
Her teaching spans masterclasses at institutions like the Manhattan School of Music, Curtis Institute, and Seoul Conservatory. She has performed at festivals including Marlboro Music Festival, La Jolla Festival, and Strings Festival in Steamboat Springs. DeAlmeida is also an ambassador for the American Respiratory Alliance, advocating for music’s health benefits, and performs on F. Loree oboes.
Notable student achievements under her mentorship include positions in orchestras such as the Huntsville Symphony, Chattanooga Symphony, and Buffalo Philharmonic. Her career highlights include solo performances with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under conductors like Sir Andrew Davis and Manfred Honeck, as well as recordings with Sir André Previn and the Radio Orchestra of Berlin.
