Dr. Cynthia G. S. Franklin is the Stiernberg/Spencer Family Professor in Mental Health and serves as the Director of External Relations at the Steve Hicks School of Social Work at The University of Texas at Austin. She holds a courtesy appointment in the Department of Psychiatry at the Dell Medical School. As a leading authority in clinical social work and mental health, Dr. Franklin has dedicated her career to advancing evidence-based interventions, particularly Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT).
Dr. Franklin's research focuses on school mental health, solution-focused brief therapy, dropout prevention, and interventions for at-risk youths. She has been instrumental in demonstrating how SFBT can serve as a powerful, strengths-based intervention that fosters resilience and positive change in individuals, families, and communities. Her work integrates SFBT into clinical practice to improve mental health outcomes efficiently and effectively across various settings including schools, mental health clinics, and family therapy practices.
Dr. Franklin's publication record demonstrates a clear trajectory toward evidence-based, solution-focused approaches that prioritize client strengths and resources. She has been particularly focused on developing and evaluating school-based mental health interventions that can be implemented efficiently within educational settings, with her most recent work examining the efficacy of the Solution-focused Intervention for Mental health (SIM) in secondary schools.
