Curtis J. Milhaupt is the William F. Baxter-VISA International Professor of Law and a Senior Fellow (by courtesy) at Stanford’s Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies. He holds dual affiliations with Stanford Law School and the Center for East Asian Studies. His research focuses on corporate governance in East Asian economies, particularly China and Japan, with an emphasis on state capitalism, cross-border transactions, and legal frameworks influencing business practices. His work bridges law, economics, and political science to analyze how institutional environments shape corporate behavior in global markets.
Key research areas include the evolution of corporate governance in China’s state-owned enterprises, regulatory challenges in cross-border mergers and acquisitions, and comparative analyses of hostile takeover regimes. His recent work explores the implications of China’s corporate social credit system and the geopolitical dimensions of corporate governance. He has advised on policy reforms related to international trade, investment, and legal transplants in emerging markets.
Milhaupt’s contributions span academic publications, policy commentary, and institutional collaborations. His articles critically assess topics like the role of the state in corporate ownership, the efficacy of legal instruments such as poison pills, and the interplay between domestic legal systems and global economic pressures. He regularly participates in interdisciplinary forums to address contemporary challenges in law and economics across Asia.
