Cristina Formenti is a Lecturer and Researcher in Film Studies at the Faculty of Arts, University of Groningen (2024–present). She previously held positions as Assistant Professor (2022–2024), Postdoctoral Research Fellow (2021–2022, 2018–2021), and Adjunct Professor (2015–2022) at Italian universities. Her work bridges animation, documentary, and environmental sustainability, with a focus on docufiction and female Italian stardom.

Her research explores ecomaterialist approaches to animated documentaries, the environmental footprint of film production, and the intersection of celebrity studies with Italian cinema. Recent publications analyze topics like the film Flee, sustainability in audiovisual media, and the negotiation of star images in promotional interviews. She has received international recognition, including the 2024 Honorable Mention for Best Monograph in Animation and the 2025 Runner-up for Best Journal Article/Chapter.
Contributions to the field include editorial roles as series editor for Animation: Key Films/Filmmakers (Bloomsbury) and co-editor of Animation Studies. She also serves as President of the Society for Animation Studies and Chair of the Governing Council of Visible Evidence.
