Craig Martin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the Jackson School of Geosciences, University of Texas at Austin. He specializes in field-based structural geology, paleomagnetism, and geochronology to study plate tectonics, orogenic systems, and planetary geology. His work emphasizes understanding forces driving plate motion and tectonic events through field observations and lab-based analyses.
Research interests include the development of mountain belts (e.g., Himalaya), plate reorganizations, and planetary-scale tectonic processes. He uses paleomagnetism to reconstruct ancient continental positions and geochronology (e.g., U-Pb zircon dating) to constrain collisional events. Recent focus areas include the Shyok Suture Zone (Ladakh), India-Eurasia collision dynamics, and early Earth habitability via banded iron formations.
Teaching includes courses like GEO 420K (Intro to Field/Strat Methods), GEO 660B (Field Geology), and GEO 381S (Tectonic Problems). His group actively recruits students for Fall 2025, emphasizing fieldwork and interdisciplinary approaches to tectonic problems.
