Cory Raymond Dean is a Professor of Physics at Columbia University, specializing in two-dimensional (2D) materials and their correlated electronic phases. He leads the Dean Lab, which explores novel quantum phenomena through advanced fabrication techniques like van der Waals heterostructures and moiré superlattices.
Dean earned his PhD from McGill University and conducted postdoctoral research at Columbia, pioneering layered-heterostructure assembly. His work focuses on manipulating quantum properties via layer rotation, dielectric engineering, and applied fields to study superconductivity, magnetism, and excitonic superfluids.
He has been recognized with prestigious awards including the American Physical Society Fellowship (2023), Brown Investigator Award (2023), and PECASE (2019). His research has twice been named a 'Top Ten Breakthrough' by Physics World.
Key research interests include moiré physics, 2D magnetism, and correlated electron systems. The Dean Lab collaborates across disciplines, integrating physics, engineering, and chemistry to advance nanoscale device technologies.
