Xiaomeng Liu is an Assistant Professor in the Physics Department at Cornell University's College of Arts and Sciences. Her research focuses on experimental condensed matter physics, particularly emergent quantum phenomena in 2D materials and van der Waals heterostructures. She holds a Ph.D. in Physics from Harvard University (2019), an M.S. in Applied Physics from Columbia University (2013), and a B.A. in Physics from Peking University (2012).

Her research group engineers quantum materials through layer-by-layer assembly of 2D materials and investigates correlated and topological states of matter using low-temperature transport measurements and scanning tunneling microscopy. Current projects include studying unconventional superconductivity, exciton condensation, frustrated magnetism, and fractional topological states in van der Waals heterostructures.
The group's recent work has explored broken symmetries in Landau levels (2023), topological defects in quantum Hall ferromagnets (2022), and exciton superfluid dynamics (2022). Her research emphasizes spectroscopic imaging of electron wavefunctions and development of quantum devices like exciton Josephson junctions.

- NSF CAREER Award (2025)
Xiaomeng Liu's laboratory, the Laboratory of Quantum Matter and Quantum Microscope, is actively seeking graduate students and postdocs to join their research efforts. The group has developed innovative STM techniques combined with nanofabrication to probe quantum materials at atomic scales, with notable achievements including the visualization of correlated electron orders and the establishment of interlayer coupling mechanisms.
