Cortney Smith is Assistant Professor of Writing and Communication at Oberlin College, specializing in rhetorical analysis of social movements and Native American cultural production. Her scholarship examines hegemonic discourse and marginalized counter-narratives across public address, literature, and media.
Research explores: 1) Indigenous survivance in literary and activist contexts (Louise Erdrich novels, #MeToo critiques); 2) Decolonial approaches to sexual violence rhetoric; 3) Peace education frameworks for writing centers; 4) Labor-based grading as pedagogical justice. Recent publications analyze Sherman Alexie allegations through Native feminism (2023), suspense novels as resistance (2023), and contract grading efficacy (2024).
Teaches courses including Rhetoric and Social Protest (WRCM 210), Public Communication (WRCM 110), and Communication Studies (WRCM 240).
