Cynthia Leitich Smith serves as the Katherine Paterson Inaugural Endowed Chair on the faculty of the MFA program in Writing for Children & Young Adults at Vermont College of Fine Arts, where she mentors emerging writers while maintaining an active publishing career as a New York Times-bestselling author and citizen of the Muscogee Nation.
Her academic background includes a JD from the University of Michigan Law School and a BS in Journalism from the University of Kansas, forming the foundation for her interdisciplinary approach to literature and advocacy.
Smith's research centers on authentic Indigenous representation in children's and young adult literature, with particular emphasis on cultural sovereignty, intertribal storytelling, and decolonizing narrative traditions. Her curation of Heartdrum, a Native-focused imprint at HarperCollins Children's Books, demonstrates her commitment to amplifying marginalized voices through both creative and editorial channels.
Recent publications reveal consistent thematic threads exploring community resilience, identity negotiation, and reimagined cultural narratives across middle-grade and young adult formats, often blending contemporary realism with speculative elements rooted in Native worldviews.
Her distinguished accolades include:
- NSK Neustadt Laureate (2021)
- American Indian Library Association’s Youth Literature Award for Hearts Unbroken
Smith's leadership extends beyond the classroom through her transformative work establishing Heartdrum as a dedicated platform for Indigenous authors and stories, significantly reshaping publishing landscapes for young readers.
