Dr Constantina Pyrkotis is a Lecturer in Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the Department of Health Sciences, University of Nicosia. She holds a PhD in Synthetic Organic Chemistry from Imperial College London (2008) and a BSc in Chemistry from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2004). Her research focuses on organic synthesis of bioactive compounds, fragment-based drug discovery, and development of antibiotics, anticancer agents, and UV-protective compounds.
Education:
- BSc in Chemistry, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2000-2004)
- PhD in Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Imperial College London (2004-2007)
Research interests include asymmetric synthesis, RNA-targeted antibiotics, and drug discovery strategies for tuberculosis and fungal infections. Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through innovative pharmaceutical solutions.
Scientific achievements include:
- Development of novel RNA-binding molecules with nM potency against bacterial ribosomes
- Discovery of antifungal agents targeting pantetheine biosynthesis (Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation-funded)
- Design of UV-protective compounds with antioxidant activity
- Leadership in 18 research projects including cancer drug development and antibiotic resistance studies
Teaching responsibilities include organizing and instructing Pharmaceutical Chemistry courses (I-III) at the University of Nicosia, and serving as Deputy Chair of the Second Year Program in Pharmacy.
