Colleen Scanlan Lyons is an Associate Research Professor at the University of Colorado Boulder's Institute of Behavioral Science and a Fellow there. She serves as Interim Director of the Center for the Governance of Natural Resources and Project Director for the Governors’ Climate and Forests Task Force, the world’s largest subnational governmental network for forest conservation. Her work bridges social, economic, and environmental interests to promote tropical forest conservation and sustainable development with tangible benefits for communities.

Her research focuses on social movements, forest governance, and community engagement in environmental contexts. She has led field courses uniting students and professors from CU and Brazilian universities in the Amazon and Atlantic Forests, and her recent book, Running After Paradise: Hope, Survival, and Activism in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest (University of Arizona Press, 2022), examines social movements in Southern Bahia, Brazil.

Colleen mentors graduate students and collaborates with governments, Indigenous leaders, NGOs, and international donors to advance conservation and low-emissions development. She is also involved in environmental governance and social-environmental leadership research.
