Professor Cleo Bishop is affiliated with the Blizard Institute at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), serving as the Director of the QMUL Phenotypic Screening Facility, Centre Research Lead, and Academic Lead for the QMUL MB PhD Programme. Her work bridges senescence, cancer biology, and ageing research, with a focus on high-throughput screening and 2D/3D in vitro models.
- PhD in Biological Sciences, University College London (2001)
- MRC Career Development Fellow, Imperial College London (2001-2006)
- Lecturer (2010), Senior Lecturer (2016), Reader in Senescence (2020), Professor (2022) at QMUL
Research Interests span cellular senescence, its role in ageing, and cancer suppression through pro-senescence therapy. Her team explores:
- Mechanisms of senescence and ageing biomarkers like p16
- Cellular rejuvenation and its interplay with healthy ageing
- Novel genetic targets for senostatic/senolytic therapies in cancer and ageing
- Senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) and extracellular vesicles
Key Publications highlight her work on SASP isolation, EGR2 as a senescence driver, and systems biology approaches to senescence. Awards include an MRC Career Development Fellowship. She supervises PhD students such as Bethany Hughes and Emily O’Sullivan, with alumni like Dr. Paul Braker and Dr. Madeleine Moore.
Labs & Collaborations: The Phenotypic Screening Facility (managed by Dr. Luke Gammon) supports her research. She organizes cross-campus forums on 'Senescence and Ageing' and 'Extracellular Vesicles'.
