Clemens Bonnen

Clemens Bonnen is a Professor at the Department of Architecture at Bremen University of Applied Sciences (HSB), where he has been teaching since 2000. He currently serves as the Head of the School of Architecture Bremen (since 2014) and has held various administrative positions including Vice Rector for Studies and Teaching (2009-2013) and Dean of the Architecture Department (2003-2008).

His educational background includes a Diploma from the Technical University of Berlin (1989). He has been actively involved in professional organizations, including the German Werkbund (since 2001) and the Association of German Architects (BDA) (since 1995).

Professor Bonnen's research focuses on architectural heritage and reuse, building with infra-lightweight concrete, and public space and monuments at an international level. His teaching emphasizes conceptual design, monolithic construction methods, and the relationship between material, shape, and construction. He advocates for a holistic approach to architectural education that integrates design, technical, social, and ecological problem-solving.

His recent work includes projects involving infra-lightweight concrete construction, such as the "Infra-House – Serial construction in insulating concrete ILC" which won a prize in the competition 'Creating Living Space'. He has also been involved in monument protection projects, including conversions and extensions of listed churches.

Professor Bonnen is actively engaged in the academic community, serving on accreditation commissions and organizing conferences and exhibitions. He has facilitated international exchanges with universities in Italy, India, UAE, and Sudan, and has been involved in curriculum development.

He leads the School of Architecture Bremen's initiatives in sustainable construction and architectural education, with a particular focus on addressing climate change and biodiversity crises through architectural design.
