Claudia Martini is a Full Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Pisa, where she has held a faculty position since 2000. She currently serves as Vice Rector for national research (since 2016) and previously held leadership roles including Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Director of the Department of Pharmacy. Her academic journey includes a PhD in Neuroscience, research positions at Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, and international experience at the University of Washington.
Her research focuses on receptor biochemistry, particularly G protein-coupled receptor mechanisms, and has expanded to stem cell signaling pathways in aging, neurodegeneration, and cancer. Key interests include neuroinflammation regulation through TSPO, Alzheimer's therapeutics, and molecular oncology.
Recent publications (2020-2025) demonstrate strong emphasis on:
- Neurodegenerative disease mechanisms (Alzheimer's, microglial activation)
- Cancer therapy resistance (melanoma, glioblastoma)
- COVID-19 pathophysiology and biomarkers
- Nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems
- Neuroprotective compounds (naringenin, trazodone derivatives)
She leads an active research team investigating cell signaling pathways and mentors students through PhD programs in pharmaceutical sciences.
