Swapan K. Ray is a Professor in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology & Immunology at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, Columbia. He holds a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Calcutta, India, and completed his postdoctoral training at Brookhaven National Laboratory, collaborating with Harvard Medical School.
- PhD in Biochemistry, University of Calcutta, India
- Postdoctoral Fellowship, Brookhaven National Laboratory, NY
Dr. Ray's research spans molecular mechanisms of human diseases, with a focus on apoptosis, autophagy, and neurodegeneration. His early work involved bacteriocin plasmids in Pediococcus acidilactici, followed by UV-induced DNA damage repair in human skin. His current research investigates glioblastoma, neuroblastoma, spinal cord injury, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and multiple sclerosis, emphasizing calpain proteases, retinoid signaling, and flavonoid-based neuroprotection.
His recent publications highlight autophagy modulation in CNS disorders, CRISPR applications in glioblastoma, and gut-brain axis involvement in neurodegeneration, reflecting a strong trend toward translational and interdisciplinary neuroscience.
Dr. Ray has edited multiple peer-reviewed journal issues and authored books on neurochemistry and cancer. He mentors students and collaborates widely to advance therapeutic strategies for CNS diseases.
- Editor, Neurochemical Research (2007)
- Editor, CNS & Neurological Disorders-Drug Targets (2008)
- Editor, Neuroimmunology and Neuroinflammation (2020)
- Editor, Cells - Cell Death Mechanisms in Glioblastoma (2024)
- Author/Editor, Springer and Elsevier books on Brain Trauma, Glioblastoma, Neuroblastoma, Retinoid Signaling, and Neuroprotection
He has trained undergraduate, graduate, medical students, and postdoctoral fellows. His research is funded by federal, state, and private sources. Dr. Ray leads a multidisciplinary lab investigating cell death, survival mechanisms, and therapeutic interventions in malignant and neurodegenerative diseases.
