Azizul Haque, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacology & Immunology at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and a member of the Cancer Immunology Program at Hollings Cancer Center. He is also a VA Research Scientist at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center. His research focuses on cancer immunology, neurodegeneration, and inflammation, particularly in spinal cord injury and Parkinson’s disease. Dr. Haque’s expertise includes antigen processing, calpain inhibition, and neuroprotective therapies. His work is supported by NIH/NCI/NINDS, VA, DoD, and other agencies.
Research Interests:
- Cancer Immunology & Immunotherapy
- Inflammation & CNS Injury
- Neuronal Degeneration & Regeneration
- HLA antigen presentation
- Calpain inhibition mechanisms
- Environmental toxin effects (arsenic, manganese)
Publications Highlight Trends:
- Focus on spinal cord injury mechanisms and neuroprotection (enolase inhibition, estrogen therapy)
- Role of calpain in neurodegenerative diseases (Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis)
- Immune modulation in cancer (prostate, melanoma) and autoimmune arthritis
- Toxicology studies on arsenic/manganese exposure effects
Grants & Collaborations: Serves as a grant reviewer for NIH, VA, DoD, and others. Collaborates on projects involving nanoparticle delivery systems, T-cell recognition, and environmental health impacts. Leads studies on therapeutic targets like GILT, HLA class II pathways, and anti-inflammatory strategies.
Labs/Teams: Affiliated with Hollings Cancer Center and VA Medical Center research programs, focusing on translational immunology and neurodegenerative disease models.
