Claude Viau is an Associate Professor at the Université de Montréal, affiliated with the School of Public Health and the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health. His research focuses on biological monitoring of chemical pollutants, particularly polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and their link to early biological effects. He holds a D.Sc. in Medical Sciences (Toxicology) from the Catholic University of Louvain and has held leadership positions such as Director of the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health (1994–2002) and Director of the Université de Montréal Public Health Research Institute (2010–2013). He has led numerous research projects funded by organizations like the IRSST and Health Canada, focusing on chemical exposure risks and occupational health.
Education: B.Sc. in Chemistry (McGill University), M.Sc. in Analytical Chemistry (Université de Montréal), D.Sc. in Medical Sciences (Toxicology, Catholic University of Louvain).
Research interests include biomarker development, toxicokinetics, and risk assessment for chemical mixtures. He has authored over 50 peer-reviewed articles and contributed to international committees such as the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (Biological Exposure Indices Committee) and the International Commission on Occupational Health.
Key projects include the MIXIE tool for assessing chemical mixture risks and research on PAH exposure in occupational and environmental settings. Awards include the Professeur honoraire title. He has advised over 15 graduate students and participated in national health surveys like the Canadian Health Measures Survey.
