Prof Clare Wright is a Professor of Linguistics & Language Teaching at the University of Leeds, serving as School Director of Taught Postgraduate Education in the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies. She holds a BA (Hons) from Cambridge University, an MA and PhD in Second Language Acquisition from Newcastle University, and a CELTA qualification. Her expertise spans task-based pedagogy, L2 fluency, Mandarin acquisition, and psycholinguistics, with a focus on Study Abroad contexts and international education.
Research interests include second language acquisition interfaces, academic interactional competence, and digital tools for language learning. She collaborates with institutions like Shanghai Jiao Tong University and leads initiatives such as the Year Abroad Network and Transnational Mobility in Education Network (TraMe). She has served as an external examiner for universities including Cambridge, Edinburgh, and King’s College London.
Prof Wright is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and contributes to academic journals like TESOL Quarterly and Language Teaching Research. She supervises PhD students exploring communicative competence in English, Chinese, and other languages, particularly in Study Abroad and digital technology contexts.
