معرفی
Dr. Jimin Kahng is an Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics in the Department of Modern Languages at the University of Mississippi, located within the College of Liberal Arts. She teaches a range of courses including TESOL, language acquisition, second language assessment, and quantitative research methods. Dr. Kahng is an active scholar whose research focuses on second-language speech development and L2 fluency.
Education
- Ph.D. in Second Language Studies, Michigan State University, 2014
Research Interests
Dr. Kahng’s research centers on understanding how second-language oral language develops and how instruction and assessment can facilitate this process. Her recent projects investigate L2 fluency from three complementary perspectives: cognitive fluency (underlying processing efficiency), utterance fluency (measurable temporal features of speech), and perceived fluency (listeners’ subjective impressions). She employs experimental and longitudinal designs to explore individual differences among adult learners, the role of motivation and language use, and the impact of rater characteristics on speech assessment.
Recent Publications
Across her 2022–2024 publications, Dr. Kahng has advanced our understanding of how fluency components interact over time and how subjective and objective measures correlate. Her 2024 longitudinal study links developmental trajectories of utterance and cognitive fluency, while her 2023 articles delve into rater cognition and individual learner factors. Collectively, this body of work situates fluency at the intersection of psycholinguistic processing, pedagogical intervention, and assessment validity.
Grants & Funding
- National Science Foundation grant (awarded 12/2022) to investigate wordlikeness judgments among native English and Korean speakers
