Professor Clare McManus is Professor of Central and East European Studies in the Department of Central and East European Studies at the University of Glasgow's College of Social Sciences. She also serves as Dean for Global Engagement (External Relations) and Postgraduate Programme Leader for MSc/MRes in Russian, Central and East European Studies. Additional roles include Co-Directorship of the Centre for Russian, Central and East European Studies (CRCEES) and membership in the Universities UK International Outward Student Mobility group.
Her research examines:
- Internationalisation of Higher Education systems and Erasmus+ implementation
- Democratisation processes in Central/Eastern European higher education
- Civil society development in post-communist states
- EU policy-making after enlargement
- Democratic consolidation in transition economies
Publications consistently analyze political transitions in Poland, focusing on electoral behavior, corruption, identity formation, and EU integration. Recent work examines voter turnout impacts, corruption concerns, right-wing political evolution, and dual national-European identities in Polish society.
She has secured significant grants including:
- €4.7 million for Erasmus Mundus recognition (2011-2018)
- £600,000 from AHRC for CRCEES (2012-2016)
- ESRC award for 'Poland's Third Transition' (2001-2003)
Supervised 6 PhD students to completion researching Romani integration in Czechia, Hungarian presidential politics, reproductive health in Romania/Moldova, EU regional policy impacts, local governance in Poland, and gendered welfare in Czechia. Leads the Centre for Russian, Central and East European Studies (CRCEES) and contributes to Language Based Area Studies initiatives.
