Clare McGovern is a Senior Lecturer and Undergraduate Program Chair in the Department of Political Science at Simon Fraser University. She holds a BA (Hons) from the University of Oxford, and MA and PhD degrees from the University of British Columbia.
Her research examines why separatist parties participate in political systems they seek to leave, with case studies including the Scottish National Party (UK), Bloc Québécois (Canada), and Catalan nationalist parties (Spain). Additional research explores intersections between legal and political systems, particularly when policy debates shift to judicial arenas.
McGovern's teaching focuses on Justice and Law, Diversity and Migration, Research Methods, and Public Policy. She leads the department's teaching assistant training program and has received a Teaching and Learning Grant for community partnership initiatives in first-year courses. Her professional background includes work with the UK National Audit Office examining criminal justice systems and peacekeeping operations.
