Clare Chandler

Professor Clare Chandler is a leading Medical Anthropologist at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), affiliated with the Department of Global Health and Development within the Faculty of Public Health and Policy. Her work bridges medical anthropology with global health challenges like antimicrobial resistance (AMR), malaria, Ebola, and multimorbidity. She co-founded the LSHTM Antimicrobial Resistance Centre and leads its Anthropology of AMR research group, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration across human and animal health sectors. Her research employs ethnographic, historical, and epidemiological methods, focusing on antimicrobial use, diagnostics, and policy frameworks in diverse contexts from Uganda to Thailand and the UK.

Prof. Chandler’s teaching includes Medical Anthropology, Qualitative Methods, and One Health courses, contributing to LSHTM’s global health curricula. She supervises PhD students researching antibiotic regulations, hygiene interventions, and health policies in Africa and the UK. Her professional roles include advising governmental and intergovernmental committees, serving on international boards, and leading grants like the Medical Research Council’s AMR initiatives.

Her recent publications highlight AMR surveillance, WASH sector evolution, and multimorbidity models in Africa. She advocates for equitable AMR strategies and critiques pandemic metrics, emphasizing ethical and social dimensions of global health interventions. Key projects include the FIEBRE study on febrile illness and the AMIS research hub exploring AMR’s societal impacts.
