Catherine Goodman

Professor Catherine Goodman is a globally recognized academic in global health and health economics at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). Her current position as Professor in Health Economics & Policy began in 2016. She holds affiliations with institutions like the Kenya Medical Research Institute (2006–2011) and has served in non-academic roles such as ODI Fellow in Lesotho (1994–1996). Her research focuses on improving healthcare quality and access in low- and middle-income countries, particularly within private sector healthcare systems, malaria management, and maternal health.

Education: PhD in Health Economics (LSHTM, 2000–2004), MSc Development Economics (SOAS, 1993–1994), BA Economics (University of Cambridge, 1990–1993).

Research Interests: Private sector healthcare governance, quality improvement interventions (e.g., SafeCare certification), antibiotic stewardship, and regulation of e-pharmacies. Recent projects include analyses of healthcare market structures in Georgia and India, and evaluation of Global Fund initiatives.

Grants: Active funding includes the Fleming Fund Phase II Fellowships Programme (2024–2025) and research on e-pharmacy regulation in LMICs (UKRI, 2022–2025). Past grants include studies on malaria case management and private sector subsidies (AMFm).

Professional Activities: Served on WHO technical committees, chairs NIHR funding committees, and mentors early-career researchers. She is Section Editor for Health Policy and Planning (2012–2015).

Labs/Teams: Collaborates with LSHTM’s Global Health Economics Centre and Antimicrobial Resistance Centre. Leads interdisciplinary teams on projects like IMPRESS (management practices in Malawi hospitals) and governance of private healthcare sectors.
