Clara Ursitti is a Lecturer and Researcher in Fine Art-Sculpture & Environmental Art at The Glasgow School of Art's School of Fine Art. With over two decades of professional activity documented from 2001 to 2023, she maintains an active practice centered on olfactory art and sensory installations. Her institutional affiliation with GSA is consistent across all publications and exhibitions.
Ursitti's research focuses on the intersection of scent, gender, and cultural identity, pioneering olfactory art practices through works like Self Portrait in Scent and The Nose Knows. Her practice extends into environmental sculpture, material culture studies, and site-specific interventions, often exploring territorial boundaries and spatial politics. Key methodologies include scent diffusion systems, collaborative heritage reinterpretations, and symbolic object construction that challenges conventional sensory hierarchies in art.
Major exhibitions include There is Something in the Air: Scent in Art at Museum Villa Rot (2015), Belle Haleine: The Scent of Art at Tinguley Museum (2015), and Amik at Glasgow's Gallery of Modern Art (2022-2023). Her 2023 presentation Il buono, il brutto e il cattivo at Siegen's Museum für Gegenwartskunst demonstrates continued scholarly engagement with scent classification systems.
Her notable recognition includes:
- Helen Chadwick Senior Research Fellowship (Arts Council of England, 2006-2008)
Ursitti's artistic output reveals evolving trajectories from early scent-based gender explorations (Scent of a Woman, 2002) toward complex spatial interventions (Bring Back the Hill, 2017) and contemporary scent taxonomies (2023). Her collaborative projects like Heritage Site (2016) demonstrate interdisciplinary approaches bridging art, anthropology, and public engagement.
