Claire Ketnor

Claire Ketnor is a Principal Lecturer and Teaching and Learning Portfolio Lead in the Department of Engineering and Mathematics at Sheffield Hallam University. She holds a PhD in Semigroup Theory from the University of York (completed prior to joining Sheffield Hallam in 2011), alongside an MSc in Applied Mathematics and various teaching certifications. Her research focuses on pedagogical innovation, inclusive teaching practices, and student-centered approaches to mathematics education. Notable contributions include creating an international Psychology of Mathematics Education research cluster and developing innovative teaching tools like Rubik’s cubes for abstract concept visualization.

Dr. Ketnor has held leadership roles such as Acting Subject Group Leader for Mathematics (2018–2020) and Course Leader for the BSc Mathematics program (2015–2018). Her work emphasizes fostering student agency through mistake-friendly learning environments and peer-driven assessment methods. In 2010, she received a Vice-Chancellor’s Teaching Award for her pedagogical excellence during her PhD studies at the University of York. Current activities include organizing departmental seminars, coordinating cross-university collaborations with La Trobe University, and serving as an External Examiner at Nottingham Trent University.

Her research publications explore topics such as peer-assisted learning, lecturer-student interaction dynamics, and the use of digital tools like PeerWise to enhance student engagement. These efforts reflect her commitment to advancing inclusive and adaptable educational practices in mathematics and engineering disciplines.
