Claire Bastie

Claire Bastie is an Associate Professor (Teaching Focussed) in Metabolic Biochemistry at Warwick Medical School, University of Warwick, within the Department of Biomedical Sciences. She earned her Ph.D. from INSERM's Centre of Biochemistry at Nice-Sophia-Antipolis (France), followed by postdoctoral training and a Research Instructor position at the State University of New York. She established her independent research lab at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York in 2010 with NIH funding, maintaining a joint appointment with Warwick Medical School from 2011-2015 before relocating permanently to Warwick.

Her research investigates nutrient sensing pathways in metabolic diseases with three primary foci:

• Fyn tyrosine kinase regulation of adipose tissue biology in obesity
• Maternal-fetal metabolic signaling in pregnancies complicated by obesity/diabetes
• Autophagy and energy homeostasis in diabetes pathogenesis

Publications demonstrate consistent emphasis on molecular mechanisms of diabetes, spanning basic kinase signaling (Fyn/AMPK), clinical studies on glycemic control technologies, and placental biology. Recent work highlights extracellular vesicles in gestational disorders and diabetic kidney disease mechanisms.

Research funding includes:

• Medical and Life Sciences Research Fund (2021): Hyaluronic acid hydrogels for breast reconstruction fat graft survival
• Historic NIH support for lab establishment at Albert Einstein College of Medicine

She leads the Nutrient Sensing Laboratory investigating metabolic cross-talk between tissues, with active projects on adipose plasticity and gestational diabetes pathophysiology.
