Stephen R. Farmer is a Professor of Biochemistry at Boston University School of Medicine, with a research focus on adipose tissue biology and cellular differentiation. He received his BSc in Biochemistry from Liverpool University (UK) and a Ph.D. in Developmental Biochemistry from the National Institute for Medical Research (London, UK). His laboratory explores mechanisms regulating white, beige, and brown adipocyte formation, including transcriptional programs like PPARγ and MRTFA.
- Director, Adipose Tissue Biology and Nutrient Metabolism Core (2018-2022)
- Co-organizer, NIH/NIDDK meeting on Adipose Tissue Niche (2016)
- Active member of multiple NIH study sections (since 2015)
His research has identified novel targets for anti-obesity therapeutics and characterized cellular complexity in adipose tissues through single-cell RNA sequencing. He has served on editorial boards of journals like Obesity, Journal of Biological Chemistry, and Molecular Endocrinology, and has organized major conferences in his field.
Recent publications highlight his work on obesity-induced fibrosis, beige adipogenesis, and pharmacological interventions like Roscovitine. His laboratory members include Nabil Rabhi and Naz Unsal, with collaborations spanning cancer research, diabetes, and metabolic disorders.
