Claire Anscomb is a Lecturer in Fine Art at De Montfort University (DMU), combining artistic practice with expertise in analytic philosophy of art and aesthetics. Her work explores themes of visibility, technology’s impact on image-making (e.g., AI and algorithms), and the epistemic and affective qualities of drawing. Prior roles include a British Society of Aesthetics Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Liverpool and teaching at the University of Kent and Kaplan International College London. She co-edits the peer-reviewed journal Debates in Aesthetics and is affiliated with the Institute of Arts, Design, and Performance at DMU.
Anscomb holds a PhD in History and Philosophy of Art from the University of Kent (2016–2019), an MA in History and Philosophy of Art from the same institution (2014–2015), and a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from the University of Southampton (2011–2014). Her research bridges art production and theory, addressing questions about creativity, technological interventions in art, and the ethics of image manipulation.
Her exhibitions include solo and group shows at venues like the Mall Galleries (London), the Leicester Gallery, and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. Key publications focus on AI’s role in art authorship, hybrid art forms, and photographic ethics, with articles in journals like AI & Society and British Journal of Aesthetics. Anscomb has received awards such as the Irene H. Chayes New Voices Award (2022) and the John Fisher Memorial Prize (2021).
Her current projects include Selfie Esteem, examining beauty filters’ ethical and aesthetic impacts, and research on AI’s influence on artistic collaboration. She actively participates in academic societies like the European Society for Aesthetics and frequently presents at conferences globally.
