Dr. Jonathan Friday is a Senior Lecturer in Art History at the University of Kent, School of Arts. He previously held positions at the University of Aberdeen (Department of Philosophy) and served as a visiting scholar at the University of Latvia and the College of Wooster. His academic journey includes a BA in the History of Ideas (St. John’s College, 1985), a BA in Philosophy (King’s College London, 1990), and postgraduate degrees in Philosophy (MLitt and PhD, Cambridge University, 1991 and 1994).
His research focuses on the aesthetics of photography and 18th-century British aesthetics, particularly the relationship between aesthetics and ethics. Key influences include thinkers like Andre Bazin and authors like Hume and Shaftsbury. He is currently developing monographs on the philosophy of photography and the interplay of aesthetics and morality in British philosophy.
Teaching includes modules such as History and Aesthetics of Photography and Taste, Beauty and the Sublime: Studies in 18th Century Aesthetics. He has supervised research students in photography theory and 18th-century aesthetics. Professional roles include membership in the AHRC Peer Review College (2004–2007) and a Board Member of the Lieven Gevaert Research Centre for Photography.
His publications span journals like Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism and British Journal for the History of Philosophy, alongside books such as Art and Enlightenment: Aesthetics in the 18th Century (2004) and Aesthetics and Photography (2002).
