Dr. Claire Ahn is an Associate Professor of Multiliteracies at Queen's University's Faculty of Education. She holds a Ph.D. (2018) and M.Ed. (2013) from the University of British Columbia, and a B.Ed. (2002) from the University of Alberta. Her research focuses on how information is mediated across platforms, particularly in visual and digital contexts, and its impact on societal understanding. She has over 20 years of teaching experience, including a decade as a secondary English Language Arts (ELA) teacher, which deeply informs her work.
Key research interests include multiliteracies, visual literacy, environmental education, documentary film analysis, and curriculum design. Current projects involve SSHRC-funded studies on social justice education implementation and critical digital literacy for newcomer seniors, alongside New Frontiers Research Fund work using the PhoneMe platform for community learning. She is a graduate supervisor and co-PI on multiple interdisciplinary grants.
Her work bridges theory and practice, emphasizing pedagogical implications for ELA curricula and teacher education. Notable contributions include analyzing documentary films' role in environmental awareness and leveraging social media for curriculum decolonization. Dr. Ahn’s research often involves collaborative, transmodal approaches to education and community engagement.
