Dr Clair Merriman is a Senior Lecturer and Divisional Lead for NMAHP Research and Innovation at Oxford Brookes University's Oxford School of Nursing and Midwifery, holding a joint appointment with Oxford University Hospitals Foundation Trust. With a clinical background as a Registered General Nurse specializing in neuroscience and critical care, she brings extensive practical experience to her academic role, having worked at Oxford's regional Neuroscience Unit since 1992.
Her research interests focus on nursing, midwifery and allied health workforce development, research capacity building, and the Fundamentals of Care framework and its impact on patient outcomes. Dr Merriman completed her PhD in 2020 on ward rounds in critical care units, which influenced national guidelines. Her recent work examines internationally educated nurses in England, pandemic preparedness of nursing students, and student attrition in nursing programs.
Dr Merriman has published extensively in high-impact journals from 2021-2024, with research spanning nursing education, workforce development, patient safety, and interprofessional collaboration. Her publications demonstrate a consistent focus on practical applications of nursing research to improve clinical practice and education.

As an educator, Dr Merriman teaches on the Advanced Clinical Practice programs and the Professional Nursing Doctoral Programme, supervising MSc and doctoral students. She has secured significant research funding, including as Principal Investigator for a Health Education England project exploring factors influencing the learning environment for UK and non-UK trained nurses (2022-2025, £70,799) and as Co-investigator on a study supporting nursing students at risk of leaving their programs (2023-2024, £38,536). Her professional memberships include the Royal College of Nursing and Nursing and Midwifery Council.
